Eight days. Three places that have almost nothing in common with each other. Hanoi is loud and chaotic and great. Sapa is cold and green and surprisingly moving. Halong Bay looks fake until you're actually on the water and realise it doesn't. This trip does all three without feeling rushed, which, honestly, is harder to pull off than it sounds.
Read MoreHanoi is not a gentle introduction. It throws motorbikes, noise, and incredible smells at you from the moment you step outside, and most people are hooked within the first hour of walking around. The city tour covers the big landmarks, the Mausoleum, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Temple of Literature, but the bits between stops are just as good. The Water Puppet Show sounds like the kind of thing you'd skip. Don't skip it.
Then the mountains. Sapa is a different world, cooler air, terraced fields dropping off into the valley, villages where people are genuinely just living their lives and not performing anything for visitors. The trek through Muong Hoa Valley takes you into Lao Chai and Ta Van. You have lunch cooked by a local family in their home. No menu, no waiter, just food at someone's table. A lot of people say that's the part they remember most. Makes sense.
Halong Bay closes it out. The Flamingo Cruise is comfortable without being over the top. You kayak, you walk through Surprising Cave, you climb Titop Island if your legs still have something left. Squid fishing happens after dark and is mostly just a good excuse to stand on the back of the boat. The bay is every bit as good as the pictures, maybe better, because the pictures don't have the sound of water against limestone at 6 am when no one else is awake yet.
