Cellular Jail is located in Port Blair, the capital city of Andaman, and this is also known as Kala Pani Jail in the ancient colonial time of India. This jail is a very famous spot in Port Blair nowadays and thousands of travelers visit here to know the history of this place. This Jail was built by the British Government during the colonial time of India, and construction started in 1896 and was completed in 1906. This jail reflects the darkest chapters of Indian history and many freedom fighters brutally punished here by the British government such as Yogendra Shukla, Batukeshwar, and Vinayak Damodar.

History of Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail is constructed by thousands of Indian workers in ten years of the time frame and seven prolonged series of constructed jails are connected in one central tower. This prison is designed in such a way that no one can watch and talk with fellow prisoners.

There are 696 small cells that are constructed in prison and each size is 4.46-meter high and 2.7-meter in width with a small window. When construction was completed British government used to imprison freedom fighters. They arrested those who fought against British Government and sent them to this Jail and here they were all punished brutally.

Cellular Jail Memorial

In 1947 when India became an independent country, this jail was preserved by the Indian Government, and this jail was announced as a Cellular Jail Memorial by the Prime Minister of India on 11th February 1979. Here you can watch the statues of freedom fighters and the life of the pensioners during those days when they spent their time in this Jail.

Cellular Jail Light and Sound Show

The light and sound show is organized here every day and by this activity, they try to showcase the life and sacrifice of the freedom fighters. This show is hosted in both language Hindi as well as English and this show is organized in the evening timing at 6:00 Pm in Hindi and in English at 7:00 Pm. You can spend your quality time listening and watching the prisoner’s life.
